Conscious Sedation

At our Dover practice we provide inhalation sedation, also known as relative analgesia, on a private only basis.  This entails breathing in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which is commonly known as laughing gas.  This gives the patient a pleasent, relaxed feeling.  You remain awake and in control throughout the treatment and even able to talk to the dentist although you may become a little drowsy.  Some people don't have any memory of the treatment, only remembering before and after being given the gas.  You won't feel any pain or discomfort as a local anaesthetic is used as normal.

A mouthpeice is not used as the dentist needs clear access to your mouth, instead a small comfortable nosepeice is used.  The amount of gas you are breathing in is monitered at all times although it is very difficult to overdose on the gas as after a couple of ordinary breaths of air the mixture will leave your body and you will feel back to normal.

You should eat a light meal about an hour before your appointment and ideally a responsible adult should come with you and take you home.  After the procedure you shouldn't drive or operate heavy machinery, sign any legal documents or drink alcohol for a clear 24 hours.

At this present time, this service is only available at the Dover practice but your dentist can refer you for this treatment and then you can continue with your routine treatment and check-ups with your regular dentist.
